David and I are thrifting addicts. We browse and browse and occasionally we’ll find something really awesome. So the day David called me, asking about some benches, I wasn’t surprised when he said, “Never mind! I’m buying them!” and hung up the phone. He got home a few minutes later with them and once I saw them, I fell in love! They’re solid wood benches, with a storage seat. Definitely a good find if you ask me!
I went shopping a few days later for the stuff to stain these. Staining really isn’t as difficult as you probably think it is. I was nervous, I’d never really stained anything before. I googled a bunch, read several blog posts about it, trying to calm my nerves. Once I got started, I got in my groove!
Not to shabby, right?! $20 each isn’t bad either!
First up, sand them down. Sand off that very top layer; all of the dirt, and grime.
Once you’ve gotten it all sanded down, wipe it down with a damp cloth.
Next up, I used a pre-stain wood conditioner. (I used this one).
Then I used a stain & polyurethane mix. (This one but a different color -Antique Walnut)
I did one layer and let it dry.
I followed it up with a second coat and let them dry.
A few tips:
Stain doesn’t wash off easily. Wear gloves.
Let fully dry.
Be sure to stain only in an openly airy room. I used our garage and had the garage doors open.
What do you think? I love them! The real question is though, what now?! Do I leave them as is? Toss some throw pillows on them? Make little cushions? What? Let me know your thoughts below!
