It’s not everyday that I leave the house. In fact, I spend more time at home than not. I go days on end without actually going anywhere. Totally normal for the life of a stay at home Momma… I’m used to it. On the days that I do go out, I dress up, fix my hair, get ready and dressed to go be around people.
On days that I’m at home, I’m usually in a tank and cut off shorts, hair all up in a knot on my head… or so messy that it’s basically turning into dreadlocks. There is no in between.
Even on the days that I am home and messy, I never really feel messy. Messy = unproductive and that won’t fly in this house. I need productivity or I feel unaccomplished and mad at myself. So in order to help me stay focused and on top of things, I do three things every single day.
1. Start your day the right way. For me, that’s coffee. I know, I know, “we all drink coffee, Amber”. No, I mean that I take the time to make a good cup. I then sit and enjoy it without messing with anything work related or home related. I sit and sip while catching up on Facebook, or browsing Instagram or Pinterest. I need that 15/20 minutes to myself to just wake up. After that, I prep my second cup and sit down at my computer to check my planner, catch up on emails, and then I get ready to get some work done. So do whatever it is that lets you have a relaxing start to the day.
2. Set timers/Stay on track. I set timers for everything. Actual timers for the kids’ gaming time. Mental timers for meals, snacks, and switching around tasks. I’ll spend a certain amount of time focusing on cleaning, then I’ll move back to my computer, then the kids and I will venture outside to play, then back in to prep meals, etc etc, on and on. If I don’t mentally set a stopping point in my head, I’ll continue along without thinking about it, finish up whatever it was that I was doing, and totally forget about everything else that I needed to do that day. If I sit too long at my desk, the house will not get cleaned. If I clean for too long, I’ll end up tackling bigger projects, which is great, but then I added more desk work to the next day’s agenda. Timers help me stay on track.
3. Make lists. I keep lists of everything! I mean, I have a running to-do list. I have a list of upcoming expenses that I mark out as each passes… incoming money, blog tasks, posts, to-dos, kid stuff, house needs, groceries, etc etc… I even have an ongoing list of incoming mail that we’re expecting… I mark each out as it arrives. I’m a weirdo but I do what works for me.
4. Along the same lines of focusing on yourself, I love celebrating me. The Vera Wang Marigold and Gardenia fragrance (new member of the team) helps me feel prettier. It’s soft peach color enhances my mood and leaves me feeling more confident about myself… even when I’m looking like I’m about to board the hot mess express. Plus, I love the fruity and floral scent.
