sharing life adventures, while drinking too much coffee

What I wore.

I’m on this kick of sharing photos/outfits I’ve worn. Not in a fashion blogger type of way, but just in a “these are my clothes, I feel cute and the world should see” kind of way. haha.

Since droppping some MAJOR poundage, my wardrobe is constantly changing & growing. It’s weird and kind of irritating if I’m being honest with you guys. It’s just a lot of work to revamp a wardrboe on a SUPER tight budget, but when you HAVE to because NONE of your clothes fit… well, thrift stores to the rescue! haha.

No, but seriously… I’ve always been a thrifter. Call me “frugal” or “cheap” but in reality, I just can’t see spending full price on something that I can pick up for a small percentage of full price from a thrift store. The other day I came across a pair of sweatpants from Abercrombie & Fitch with NEW STORE TAGS still on em. I paid $6.99 for them. Scooped them up SO fast though.

Now that doesn’t mean that I never buy new – I totally do. BUT when it’s time for a new winter wardrobe for everyone, (because kids grow sooooooo fast) we head to a thrift store. We grab a few tops/bottoms for each of us. WIN all around. The other day we spent $108 on a new winter coat for Owen & myself. A hoodie, pants, a shirt for Fin. Pants, a shir for Owen. A sweater, shirt, pants for Maddie. 3 pairs of pants for me. 1 pair for David and some shirts for us. We had like 20 items ….. $108. <– that’s why I thrift shop. My 3 pants would’ve costed me $100+ had I bought them new.

See my jeans & ear warmer below? Totally snagged those up brand new from a new boutique. <-- not sponsored in any way. I just REALLY love my jeans & ear warmer & the prices were great.

So, out of all of the above – which pieces are your favorites? Which would you wear?
Are you a thrifter too? Tell me the coolest thing you’ve ever thrifted!

The many outfits of Amber
I was cleaning up the photos on my phone the other day & came across the many many outfit selfies and thought I'd share them here. Some are adorable. Some are not.Spot the kid butts, the dog messes and dirty mirror and you win a prize. :p JK about the prize, but real life, y'all....real life.
On dressing like a mom…
The other day David and I dropped the kids off at school and headed up to Denver to do some shopping.  YAY!  If you remember, I've lost a decent amount of weight over the last year-ish so new clothes definitely can't hurt at this point. Have you heard of Evereve yet? Such a cute little shop!Evereve is a retail brand founded by moms for moms. We all know the shopping struggles, with kids especially...phew. Evereve has that taken care of for you! The moms running the Evereve we went to were so stinkin' cute and friendly.Evereve is on a mission to inspire you to embrace your beauty and power, and to show that dressing like a mom is a really great thing.Poor David had NO idea what to do with himself while we were there though, because when he shops with me, his main job is to hold my items, but every single time he'd have one, she'd come grab it from him to put into my dressing room. MY dressing room. She'd set it up for me, even put various sizes in there for me just in case because she knew some things ran up or ran small. They wrote my name on there, gave me feedback on every outfit I walked out in, it was just such an amazing shopping experience. It was just so much fun! I felt like such a VIP that day, and I WAS!Keep scrolling to see which I took home! The grey sweater? The jeans? Those camo joggers?! So many great options! Sharing more on my Instagram as well.Evereve is also offering one of you the chance to win a $500 shopping spree! Isn't that awesome?! Follow them on Facebook. Head here for more details. Side note, I greatly regret not getting that long grey sweater. Hopefully when Evereve opens up here in Colorado Springs next month they'll have it and I can grab it because *heart eyes*.
#OOTD
simple momiform, and budget friendly #ootd
Today I'm collaborating with Zaful. #OOTD is an appropriate title, right?! Ha. I couldn't think of anything catchy, so there ya go.I am not a fashion blogger. You will not find $80 jeans on this blog. I am a mom, a frugal person, a thrifty lady, and overall.... I can't justify paying $80+ for pants. I find most of my clothes at thrift stores or on sale. I did pay full price for the pants I'm wearing in these photos. You should know though that they're from Walmart. I paid $15 for them because why would I pay $80+ for a pair I can pay $15 for?! Plus, they fit beautiflly.Side note, I ran to Walmart the other day specifically hoping to snag a pair of pants that actually fit. I've been on a weird weightloss thing and all of the sudden my 12s were falling off of me. I went in hoping to walk out with a size 8. I grabbed a few pairs, a few brands, and a few sizes. Let's talk about how the size 11s wouldn't pull up my thighs, but I walked out purchasing an 8 petite. It's all about the brands! And WHY WHY WHY are brands soooooo different that I bought an 8, but an 11 wouldn't even pull up?! WTF is that nonsense?! Irritating. That's what it is.Back to the topic at hand. How cute is this top?! I ordered this top when I ordered this one and this choker.I know you've seen me post about this sweater. I've worn it a handful of times now, and I kid you not when I tell you that I get at least two compliments each time I wear it. It's fantastic and warm.

The point of today's post... to show you my cute outfit and to tell you how important it is to just know your measurements. Look at my pants story above. As a matter of fact, I ordered some (major on sale) pants from Old Navy not long ago and I knew that I'd be returning them before they even got here. I just knew they wouldn't fit right, I hoped and prayed, but I know my measurements and I knew that they just wouldn't. Guess what -- I was right! They didn't fit properly and they left me with a saggy crotch. THAT IS SUCH AN OBNOXIOUS THING WHEN IT COMES TO PANTS!Do you have any shopping woe stories like mine to share? I'd love to hear them! Leave a comment or shoot me an email & tell me all about it. And please, where is the best place to find some curvy, short peopled jeans? If you know, definitely share! Thanks :)
Christmas break. Day 1

A photo posted by Amber McCain (@ambernmccain) on Dec 20, 2016 at 7:45am PST

I have a favorite sweater. I love it. I love seeing people try to read it. I love when people comment on it. I LOVE THIS SWEATER.I love David's more. I fall over laughing every single time I stop to look at it.When boohoo emailed me wanting to send me some sweaters, I quickly agreed because HOW FREAKIN' FUN! I mean, just look at them!David wore his the other day to "work" and had Owen with him. I can only imagine the strange looks he got, walking around Ft Carson with a 5yr old while wearing those sweaters. You know they made people's days. While wearing mine, I had someone hold the door open for me while saying, "How dare you call me a filthy muggle" in a joking tone. I laughed so hard. You have no idea the amount of people I saw trying to read my sweaters silently to themselves, but their lips would be reading it. So funny seeing people cock their heads trying to catch what it says as I walk by.Fin & Maddie wore theirs on the last day of school and bounced out the door with excitement over the very idea. You bet your butt, I tossed them in the washer so we could wear em again the next day! I planned to take the kids out for breakfast and then shopping for an early Christmas dinner with my Mom (Surprise, kiddos!)Overall, day 1 of Christmas break started off wonderfully. And we all have some really cute Holiday sweaters.
Bulky blue sweaters & cute bags.
Today's post is in collaboration with DressLily.com All thoughts & opinions are legit my own.I love sweater weather. I love a good, warm sweater & that's essentially what today's post is about. I kid you not.img_4660I love this color and the feel of this sweater. Next time I wear it, I'll probably wear it under some leggings and with some boots... maybe with a scarf since our weather is finally trying to cool off. This sweater though was perfect for a little day out exploring Colorado. I loved the baggy way it fit, I love the color & how comfortable it was. I was worried it'd fit a bit funnny since it's a one size, but it's perfect. It's the perfect one sized sweater to fit various body types.Side note: I came SO close to ordering this one because of Jack. There were so many other cute tops that I wanted to order, but didn't want to go overboard having never shopped from Dress Lily before. Now that I have, I plan to order a few more... like maybe this $16 hooded topt or this $9 heart shirtimg_1440This is the bag I chose. I was torn between it and a few others (this one and this one) and between this green or the gray. David helped me practically narrow them down. I also really really liked this one and this one.img_1434I actually wore this sweater again on Monday to take Owen to school. It's bulky, but it's SO warm and on days like yesterday where it's 40 in the morning and 65 in the afternoon, it's kind of the perfect top. Also, my bag *insert heart eyes here*.The 2nd time I wore it, I paired it with black LulaRue leggings, boots, and a cream colored scarf.img_1449So, I recommend you check out Dresslily and take advantage of some AWESOME sales going on!
Our loooooong weekend & HWWI July
Before I start today’s post, let me give you a quick summary of what How We Wore It is. Basically, a photo is selected and sent out to the bloggers that sign up for the month and then we put together an outfit simply inspired by the original photo! It’s super fun to see what everyone comes up with and chooses to wear. This is my third time being a part of it (here’s the first and second), and I think it’s a fun way for me as a lifestyle/parenting blogger to throw in some fashion posts.Greenworkouttop1Inspiration from JacqueHowever, my outfit is far from exciting, we went hiking and the inspirational photo is actually something I would wear/do wear. So, sorry it's a bit boring.IMG_2852IMG_2853IMG_2854Now on to the rest of our weekend....David doesn't kid around when it comes to his burgers! Just look at this jumbo thing! Phew.IMG_2798We spent a good chunk of the weekend working on this beauty! Insert all the heart eyes here. Ignore the dog messes. We'd just picked them up new toys earlier that day. Haha.IMG_2818We also had our annual-ish Thanksgiving in July.IMG_2900Cookout in the backyard.IMG_2903Then we headed to the park to try to catch some fireworks... they were all around us, but most were blocked by hills and trees so we played at the park, ran around a big grassy field, and headed home.IMG_2908That's our weekend in a nutshell. It’s super fun to see what everyone comes up with and chooses to wear. This is my second time being a part of it (here's the first), and I think it’s a fun way for me as a lifestyle/parenting blogger to incorporate some fashion posts! This is the inspiration from Elevate Everyday.http://elevate-everyday.com/spring-skirts/While I loved everything about this outfit, it just wouldn't work with the snow/blizzard we were going through when I took these photos. I decided to take them in my bedroom because my room has the best lighting in the house, and blizzard. I'd have had to changed my whole outfit plan and then froze and then they'd be dark and dreary because it was gross out.IMG_3676I paired this chambray top with a black midi skirt, a lace slip extender, brown booties, a big ole floppy hat, a necklace, and a purse. Simple, cute, perfect.IMG_3672 Skirt: Old Navy like 2 years ago. Top: AE a few weeks ago. Booties: thrifted. Necklace: F21 (gifted from my lil sis). Purse: Don't even remember. Skirt Extender: won from a giveaway actually, but similar here.IMG_3658IMG_3664IMG_3671Anyway, this outfit actually stumped me for a bit. I knew I wanted to wear my chambray shirt. I knew I'd probably pair it with a hat. I had trouble finding a bottom and forgot I even owned this skirt. This is actually the same skirt extender I wore in the last How I Wore It that I was a part of.IMG_3672Can we focus just for a second on how cute this little fella is? He realized where I was and quickly insisted that he needed to be in some pictures with me. I tried to explain to him that it was ridiculously inappropriate for his little -only in underwear- self to be a part of these, but we cropped and made it work. Ha.IMG_3683IMG_3684I also put a widget at the bottom for you guys to shop from if you're interested in any of these. Two options of each thing I'm wearing! Trying to make it super easy for you guys to find this outfit. :)IMG_3688IMG_3665Be sure to check out how the other ladies were inspired as well.Deidre at Deidre Emme, Emily at Emmy Jake, Brooke at Silver Lining, Sierra at Sierra's View, Justine at Little Dove, Kiana at Glitter & Donuts, Amber at Amber Nicole blogs, Tayler at The Morrell Tale, Patricia at haifisch, Kelsi at Lovestrong, Emma at Ever Emma, Bekah at These Are The Days, Jenn at GiveThisGirlCoffee, Shelbie at R+S Brereton, Nellwyn at The Cardinal Press, Ruth at My Little Nest.Head over to Deidre Emme to sign up to maybe be a part of next month (it's randomly selected each month)
Guys, please please let me know your thoughts on this. I absolutely love clothes, I love fashion, I just keep it to myself, because I worry about going down the fashion blogging route. I worry that you guys won't like that, so please... let me know your thoughts; if this is something you'd be interested in seeing, etc etc. I wouldn't turn my whole blog into a fashion blog, but I'd incorporate a few more outfit posts here and there. Also, May the 4th be with you.
Let’s talk overalls.
Let's talk.... overalls!
Let's talk.... overalls! You guys, I've seen so many pairs of overalls already this season and I am just dying to own a pair. I found some that I love, but if you've been a reader for a while, you know that I really hate spending money -- especially on myself. I'll probably eventually get a pair when they're on sale randomly, but after a mad search all over town (Target, Walmart since I was already there, Forever21 [online], and Old Navy) and having no luck finding any (I found shorts at Target & grabbed those up, but really want pants), I thought I'd put together a quick round up of the internet's overalls in case any of you are having this same problem. They range from $20-$150. I've included SO many styles and colors, so there are plenty of choices!

DIY flower crown
Simple DIY flower crown
This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #WholeBlends #CollectiveBiasMommy + kid DIY flower crowns. #WholeBlends [ad]I'm a boho kind of gal. I love fringe, I love the hippie vibe, the bohemian styles, the flowers, etc etc. Simple, but gorgeous.  I'm sure that you have seen all of the flower crowns floating around the internet, right?! I certainly have and I'm so in love with them, but the flowers on the crown are usually too a bit too big for my liking.  After telling Maddie about flower crowns, I decided that she and I both needed one. I found some online that sell for $60+.  (Isn't that insane, by the way?!) I then decided that I would make them for us (for a TON cheaper).  I headed to Walmart (since I was heading there for my hair care products anyway).what you'll need to make the cutest & simplist flower crownsTo make this yourself, all you'll need is:Floral Wire Artificial flowers and/or leaves Green electrical tape. Scissors or wire cuttersDIY flower crownMeasure your head where you want the crown to sit. For Maddie's, I used one layer of wire. For mine, I doubled the measurement and cut that much wire. Twist the ends together to form a circle. Wrap the whole thing with your tape. I tried to use floral tape, but it just would NOT work right for me, so I switched to electrical tape - did the trick!DIY flower crownsDIY flower crownsCut off the flowers, tape them by the stem onto the crown's base. Continue until you're desired look.DIY flower crowneasy DIY flower crownEasy, peasy!I then made a second one for myself.diy flower crownSimple DIY flower crownNow that we've finished that, let me tell you why I've been using and LOVING the Garnier Whole Blends line. I bought the Garnier Whole Blends Color Care line after my recent DIY Balayage and I seriously just love it. It smells so good.Garnier's Whole Blends Hair Care line is so fantastic! Aside from how amazing this line smells (I stood in Walmart sniffing them all, so I know from personal experience that they smell fantastic!), this line is made with carefully selected ingredients that will hydrate, nourish and repair your hair. Whole Blends Hair Care line is blended for naturally beautiful hair and comes in a variety of blends just to fit you and your hair! The blends include:
  • Repairing - Honey Treasures
  • Hydrating - Cocnut Water and Vanilla Milk
  • Smoothing - Coconut Oil and Cocoa Butter
  • Refreshing - Green Apple and Green Tea
  • Nourishing - Avocado Oil and Shea Butter
  • Color Care - Argan Oil and Cranberry Extracts
  • IMG_3003IMG_3056Whole Blends Color Care with Argan Oil and Cranberry Extracts protects color & enhances radiance.IMG_3072IMG_3086in-store-whole-blends-lineI love that this product is so great for colored hair. I love the smell of it, seriously! SO good! There is a 3rd product in this line, a mask but unfortunately it wasn't available yet for me, so be sure to keep an eye out for that! Which blend from the Whole Blends line would you purchase?
    How We Wore It: March
Before I start today's post, let me give you a quick summary of what How We Wore It is. Basically, a photo is selected and sent out to the bloggers that sign up for the month and then we put together an outfit simply inspired by the original photo! It's super fun to see what everyone comes up with and chooses to wear. I'm so sad that I haven't participated in this before. I definitely plan to sign up more often. It's a fun way for me as a lifestyle/parenting blogger to incorporate some fashion posts! So, here's the inspiration:

    inspiration from Mint Arrow

I was inspired by the Spring feel of this outfit. I love the dress, I love the jacket, but since this is Colorado and we have the craziest weather, I had to add a hat and swap the sneakers for boots. See what I came up with below.IMG_0431Also, don't hold it against me that these are just iPhone photos. I had David take them for me while we hung out with Owen at a park down in Manitou Springs.IMG_0443We stopped at Goodwill and while I was holding Owen's hand and walking in, this lady yells out to me, "You are just the cutest!" I smiled and yelled back, "I could say the same to you!!" as she had a cute hippie vibe happening with a baby strapped to her chest and another walking beside her. Her little comment just made my day though!IMG_0444Dress: Target Purse: Burlington, but you can find it here (Same brand, same bag) Boots: Madden Girl.  I don't remember what website I got mine off of, but you can find them here. Slip: I can't remember where I got it, but similar here Hat: Boutique that unfortunately closed, same hat here (and tons of other colors). Jean jacket is old as dirt and I think from Old Navy.IMG_0445IMG_0430Make sure you check out how these lovely ladies were inspired by the look too!Deidre at Deidre Emme Katelyn at The Suitcase Blonde Elise at Sparkle and Slippers Amy at Harris inc.
