My 9 year old loves to cook. He loves it. He asked me one day if I would teach him how, and ever since then we do a lot of cooking together. When I asked him why he had a sudden interest to learn, he said, “Well… when I grow up, I’m gonna need to know! Nobody is gonna do it for me!” I was shocked by his answer. I was proud of him for wanting to learn and excited to take on this mini motherhood adventure with him.
Over the weekend, I let him make some muffins…. the kind that you just add milk to and bake.
Well, instead of 1 cup of milk, he added 2. He forgot to spray the pan first. He didn’t fully read the directions. And he made the biggest muffin mess I’d ever seen. Know what though?! Those muffins were GOOD! I didn’t even expect them to cook properly, but they turned out just fine. It was a bit of a relief to see too because poor Fin was so sad that he messed up. This is why we do a lot of our cooking TOGETHER. He’s a kid. He still needs supervised, but I think he also needs the freedom to mess up a little bit like that… to see that it’s okay to mess up. I’d literally burned dinner the night before and had to remind him of that.
So in attempts to help teach the kids to cook, we picked up some Uncle Ben’s Long Grain & Wild Ready Rice because it’s perfect for beginners, so it’s perfect to help Fin cook.
We chose a simple casserole recipe and let Fin kind of take charge.
To make this, you will need:
(Keep in mind we are a family of five and enjoy leftovers, so you may want to half this recipe if you’re just needing a smaller batch)
1 lb Chicken, cooked and cubed
3 bags of Uncle Ben’s Long Grain & Wild Ready Rice.
2 cans Cream of Chicken
Cheese for topping.
Dump it all in a bowl. Mix. Spread into baking dish. Top with Cheese. Bake 20 minutes at 425 degrees.
So simple, yet so yummy! Fin loved that he made it “himself”. He was just so proud when he heard his younger brother & sister talking about how yummy it was and how much they liked it. It was so sweet just watching his face light up with pride and happiness.
Uncle Ben’s can help you make quick, easy meals with your family. Let’s be honest, with all the back to school hustle & bustle and this Holidays coming up, this is the busiest time of the year. I know for us it is. I love that Ben’s Beginners was created to get kids to cook. Kids love to help, they just need to be allowed to help.
