Okay… now that I’m sure you’ve had enough time to enter…. I’ll continue with today’s post.
I am sure you area already aware of this, but SUMMER VACATION IS UPON US! The kids are out of school, they’ve been out for a week now, and we’ve already blown through some of the things on our “Keep us busy” list. So I whipped up a fun little way for them to remember all the exciting things we’ve done! NOTEBOOKS! We took little composition notebooks, doodled on them, wrote their names, called them their “summer adventure journals” and they’ve already written about a few different things.
They’ve talked about swimming in Mer’s not heated (for the day) indoor pool! Brr.
They mentioned shopping at Albertsons with me for these Share A Coke And A Song bottles.
They wrote about the Zoo trip we took the other day (Follow me on snapchat to see this stuff as it happens. ambernmccain )
They wrote about our visit to the Royal Gorge Bridge with Mer (My mom)
I decorated a plain little tote bag that I had leftover (from this post) so that we’d always have a little summer adventure bag. Since we were already on the subject of kid fun, I told them about my favorite song from when I was a kid. I told my kiddos that the song “Ain’t no mountain high enough” has been our families’ song for as far back as I can remember. The kids love hearing stories from when I was younger! They love hearing what I did as a kid, what their aunts and uncle did. It’s cute and I love to share the stories with them. So I told my three kiddos how we used to jump around on our living room furniture singing into hairbrushes as kids, just belting it at the top of our lungs while Mom would sit and just drink coffee, smile, and laugh at/with us. It was just the perfect little song/phrase to describe how we felt about each other and I want my ittle bittles to know that, and to know that that goes for them as well. There isn’t a Mountain high enough to keep me from them. Between living in Colorado with all of the mountains around us, that song being our song as kids, and needing a cute phrase for our bag… it just seemed perfect to use that on our Summer Adventure bag. You could easily do whatever you want to on it.
All you need to get started is:
Stencils (mine ended up not fitting the way I wanted, so I free-handed it)
Design it out on some paper first! Seriously, before you even touch the bag, figure out how you want it, where you want it, etc etc.
(Needy Cat needs to help)
Once I had it how I liked it, I lightly wrote it out, then bubbled out the letters. Since my stencils were too large, I figured that this was probably the best way to do it. I left enough space between each letter so that I could bubble them out and fill them in. Aren’t the mountains a nice little touch?
It’s definitely not perfect, the letters don’t match up, but I kind of prefer it that way. Makes it more fun for our Summer Adventure Bag! The kids loved it! We plan on putting it to use later today when we head to the library to get their summer reading challenge papers!
I honestly think that these notebooks will be something great for them to look back at later in life, or even with their kids. Don’t you? I wish I still had old journals from when I was their age. I would love to just see what my thoughts were back then, I’d love to compare my thoughts to my kids’ thoughts now. I definitely plan to do this every summer. So simple! You could even take the kid in your life (or yourself) to pick a special notebook just to log your summer adventures. They can’t wait to keep writing, and what a perfect excuse to keep them writing during summer vacation.
I've got my Coca-Cola, my cute sunglasses ?(tagged), and most importantly, our ADVENTURE BAG! ✌?️☀️ We're off to the library to pick up our reading logs for a summer reading program! ? I can't wait to see what the kids will write in their adventure journals about today's adventure. ? I'm talking about adventure journals, and how we are ready to #ExpressUrSelfie with help from the lyrics on @cocacola's "Share a Coke and a Song" bottles! Head over to the blog for details.
